"Marion Police Officer Cory Winfield, 29, was heading home on his motorcycle after finishing his shift at 1 a.m. yesterday when he was struck by a hit-skip motorist.

Fellow officers arrested a suspect while Winfield was flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he was in serious condition yesterday.

Winfield's brother, Marion County Deputy Brandy Winfield, was fatally shot in 2004 while assisting a man who he thought was a stranded motorist.

Their father, Rick Winfield, is an officer on the Marion police force, which was reeling yesterday from the Winfield family's latest blow.

"It's not fair -- that's one category you can put it in," said Lt. Mark Beaschler. "We're doing what we can for the family from here."

Winfield, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a fractured pelvis as well as head and leg injuries but is expected to recover, Beaschler said.

Winfield was southbound on Prospect Street when he was struck by a northbound car near Superior Street at 1:12 a.m., police said.

A motorist followed the car that struck Winfield to a home on Pearl Street and summoned officers, who arrested Joshua Abrams, 20, of Marion.

Abrams was charged with aggravated vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an injury accident and underage consumption. He was jailed pending a court appearance."
